Tools For Job Searching

Unemployment is down, but not to a person who is out of work or underemployed. To focus on the need for job search tools and links to employment programs, the New Jersey Community Resources website has added a new section titled, “Employment and Job Search”. It includes links to state agencies, workforce development groups, programs run by nonprofits and leading online job search tools. They include: OnRamp, Career Connections, Department of Labor and Workforce Development, One-Stop Career Centers, Civil Service Commission, John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development, New Start Career Network, Easterseals New Jersey – Senior Community Services Employment Program (SCSEP), The Balance: Best Job Search Engine Sites, Resources For Job Seekers, Elsa Langer, Indeed and Glassdoor.

New Jersey Career Connections services can be accessed through a partnership with a number of libraries throughout the state. Library staffs have been trained to provide job search assistance in the following public libraries: Atlantic City, Cumberland County, East Brunswick, Gloucester County, Long Branch, Monmouth County, New Brunswick, New Jersey State Library, Newark, North Bergen, Ocean County, Paterson, Plainfield, Roselle, Salem, Sussex County, Union and Warren County.

Employment Search Websites

The unemployment rate has dropped significantly in the past few years. However, don’t expect cheers from the 1.6 million in the United States who have been jobless for more than six months, or the out-of-work breadwinner in Cape May county where the unemployment rate currently stands at 14.1%.

One of the most read blog articles on this site is titled, “OnRamp – New Jersey Job Seekers Online Tool” and was posted in 2012. Today’s post is a revisit of current employment search tools and programs available to New Jersey job seekers.

The New Start Career Network was created in 2015 to help the long-term unemployed. They “provide older (ages 45+), long-term unemployed New Jersey job seekers with access to free, personalized career services, including web-based information resources and in-person and virtual career coaching.” Visit their site. One Stop Career Centers are located in all twenty-one counties in New Jersey. They provide: job search assistance, training and education assistance as well as on-site resource rooms (PCs, telephones, etc.).

OnRamp is an online service provided by the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development (LWD). You can create an account and receive the following:

  • Simple upload and use of an existing resume and online tools to easily build a new resume;
  • Resume enhancing tools that suggest ways to improve your resume;
  • The ability to search job opportunities collected from over 2,400 sources in one place;
  • Automatic email notices of new jobs matching your skills and experience;
  • Matches to jobs you have the skills for, but may not have considered applying to;
  • You control what information an employer can see and how you are contacted by employers who wish to interview you.

LWD provides a page with a listing of Job Fairs throughout the state.

OnRamp – New Jersey Job Seekers Online Tool

The state Department of Labor and Workforce Development has launched a job-search tool named OnRamp. It allows New Jersey job seekers to post a resume online, receive email alerts on job matches, all free of charge.

When introduced last November Labor Commissioner Hal Wirths was quoted as saying, “This service is open to everyone. People don’t have to wait to receive a pink slip to use it. We believe this will further our efforts to link job-seekers to the employers that are searching the state for new talent.”

OnRamp is considered an interactive tool as it allows employers to search resumes for prospective employees based on job skills not just job titles. It also allows consumers to have customized job profiles based on their job search strategies.

The OnRamp website is located at http://www.jobs4jersey.com. An OnRamp overview and registration instructions are also available. Other job search services are available at the state’s network of One Stop Career Centers.

The unemployment rate in New Jersey has risen for the last five months and stands at 9.9%, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
